    • Synopsis
    • A debut straight from the main competition at this year's Cannes Festival, Wild Diamond shines under the scorching sun of Fréjus, where 19-year-old Liane dreams of a big career and recognition. Living with her mother and younger sister, Liane meticulously follows online trends and reality TV shows. Her greatest hopes lie in the auditions for the show Miracle Island. Will she change her fate and break free from her provincial town? In Wild Diamond, Agathe Riedinger presents a type of character rarely seen in contemporary French cinema. The director avoids quick judgments and moralizing, instead focusing on realistic observations and an Instagram-worthy style that reflects the tastes of a teenager. Long nails, heavy makeup, and skimpy outfits set Liane apart from the local community, but also attract ambiguous comments online and objectifying stares from men. Riedinger explores pervasive sexism, unattainable beauty standards, and disastrous intergenerational communication. Clearly inspired by Andrea Arnold's work, Riedinger seeks her own voice and an unconventional model of realism. Her social engagement doesn't exclude continuous play with form and aesthetics.
