- Synopsis
- ‘The Year 2602’ is an oral history about the occupation of the Dutch East Indies seen from a child’s perspective, directed by André van der Hout and Linda Lyklema. In early 1942, Japanese troops invaded the Dutch East Indies, and the Dutch had to pledge allegiance to the emperor of Japan. According to the Japanese calendar, the year was 2602. In the film, witnesses who were then children aged between 4 and 18 talk about their experiences in the Japanese civilian prison camps during WWII. Children observe the camp with an open mind. Hunger, death and soldiers boots are soon as commonplace as pat-a-cake and hide and seek. These are personal testimonies of hardship and trauma but also of resilience, inventiveness and childlike surprise. ‘The Year 2602’ will be shown in Dutch cinemas from May 7th.
