      2011. Ukraine, Donbas.
      Herman Korolyov, 33, has lost his ambition and purpose. He lives in Kharkiv, a large city in eastern Ukraine. Herman works at a desk job for some political party, a common way to earn a living for people of his generation and education. Herman moved to the big city years ago from a small town in Donbas, hoping to become a historian, but academics in post-Soviet Ukraine can’t make a living wage. So Herman threw history aside and turned to doing what everyone around him was doing—imitating life, love and work. Or nothing much.
      One day Herman receives a strange phone call. His childhood friend Kocha calls to tells him that Herman’s brother Yura, owner of a beat-up old gas station, has disappeared. And Herman is the official, legal owner of the gas station.
Herman decides to take a trip to his hometown in Donbas, where he hasn’t been for years, to deal with the situation. His friend Bolik go with him.
      Herman’s homecoming becomes a life-changing journey, a transformation he could not have imagined.
 At the gas station, Herman learns from Kocha and a mechanic named Trauma that the business is under raider attacks by the local mafia (so-called kukuruzniks), who are seizing all the more-or-less profitable businesses and land in the area. Determined to get back to his normal life as quickly as possible, Herman meets with real and imaginary characters, childhood friends and kukuruzniks. Olga, Herman's accountant, tells him the station is a losing proposition. But for Herman, it has become more than a business matter. He suddenly finds himself defending not only the gas station but his past, his future, his lover, his friends and his home.
When Herman refuses to sell to the kukuruzniks, they set the station’s gas tanker on fire.
Herman and his friends prepare for the big confrontation and gain support from an array of locals, including characters from the local church community and bootleggers.
 On the move, Herman finds himself on a strange ghost train with the head of the kukuruzniks. His journey takes him through a series of mesmerizing encounters.
Herman returns to the town and to the coming final confrontation between the mafia and locals.
      The day comes. During the clash, the kukuruzniks kill Trauma. But the locals stand up for themselves, and to their surprise, are victorious. Herman, also to his own surprise, decides to stay in his hometown—with these people who love him, who need him, and who trust him.
