    • Half of all films ever made have been documentaries. But which are the most compelling and revealing? Scrolling through streaming platforms, we can feel numbed by choice. And in the era of fake news it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and confused by images of reality. And yet, for the last thirteen decades, documentary at its best has told us more about our times than anything else. That’s why this story matters.

THE STORY OF DOCUMENTARY FILM is a portrait of our lives, our societies, our wars, our families, journeys, creativity, relationships and struggles as well as Earth itself. It is time to tell the story of documentary in a new, compelling way. A truly global story, an epic survey of world filmmaking. It will feature many of the great female filmmakers who up until now have been written out of history. It will look anew at the classics of the genre – films like Barbara Kopple’s Harlan County USA, Asif Kapadia’s Amy, Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah and Agnes Varda’s The Gleaners and I.

It will introduce its audience to many discoveries. Brilliant films directed by women in Bulgaria in the 60s, Egyptian docs of the 70s, and movies shot over decades in Japan. Chronological, but interspersed with stand-alone thematic sections, this series will challenge assumptions about what documentary is.
