    • Synopsis
    • Our lives are full of music, sound, noises we create, perceive or even, do not notice. They please us, irritate us, inform us.

“Free aerophones” have existed for as long as civilisation. One could say that history began the moment our ancestors first wrote their exploits on the walls of caves and learned to make sound for entertainment, not survival.

The family of free aerophones is small but their purposes are varied. Alphorns and Karpatian Trembita were used by shepherds in the mountains as a signalling instrument, while Norwegian Luhr and Erzian Torama are instruments of warrior triumph. Shofar, the Jewish “Voice of God” still calls for prayer, while the meditative sounds of the Australian Didgeridoo we can hear in the streets and in the disco.

Some people search for new uses for these "old friends”, others seek to preserve the authentic national culture and history.

Time has changed their appearance, methods of manufacture, and their ultimate function: now most of them belong to music.
