    • Synopsis
    • "The Living Canvas" is a documentary exploring the colorful community of New Zealand body painting, costume and creature creation. Featuring Aotearoa's most talented artists in body decoration and adornment. An extravagant display of colour and illusion included hand painted & airbrushed body painting, special effect make up and prosthetics creating incredible creatures, fluorescent body painting, costuming, fabrication, mask making and tribal body art.
A visual spectacle, celebrating New Zealand’s finest artists showcasing and celebrating excellence in body art and special effects make-up.
Body Art should be recognized as an integral discipline in the worlds of art, television and film. “...the audience will be treated to a show that integrates design, movement and performance in celebration of Body Art. New Zealand is gaining international prestige as a film making destination and already has world acclaimed artists and special effects specialists.” Mem Bourke NZ Body Art Awards.
"The Living Canvas" Hope's to break down some of the stigmas and misconceptions of what body painting is, to further the audience and appreciation for the art form. Encouraging a new generation of artists to open their minds, pick up their brushes and sponges to transform people into beautiful alien beings, monsters from our deepest fears, fantasyland residents and luciferian denizens.
The documentary follows the journey of the artists through years of awards shows, promo gigs, film shoots, exhibitions and showcases, many hosted by the New Zealand Body Art Trust. The long painful hours covering an entire body just for that 5 minutes or less on stage or screen.
"The Living Canvas" is also a semi biographical look at my own path from a boy that just wanted to make rubber monster suits to an award winning body painter, monster maker and independent filmmaker. Learn the basics of rubber mask making and appliance application. Peek behind the curtain and learn how simple practical techniques can create magical makeup effects and special effects.
Featuring work by Carmel McCormick, Yolanda Bartram, Celeste Strewe, Sandi Cutts, Jane Ellis, Haley Marlow and many, many more! With incredible performances from both amateur and professional models and dancers.
