    • Synopsis
    • Federico, a thirty-something university professor, moves alone to a peculiar apartment in Buenos Aires. He soon realizes that he cannot rest at night because of the unbearable meowing of the kitten of a very old neighbor, Beba. He complains to the old lady and the only person who seems to ally Federico in this complaint is another neighbor: Cecilia, a sexy forty-something who seems to look favorably on a possible relationship with Federico. In fact, she offers him the incentive of allowing him to toast with her if he "takes care" of that unbearable cat. That is, if he "takes charge" of ending the affair. In the meantime, from nightmares related to flashbacks of his childhood, we learn that Federico is probably a sleepwalker and that he involuntarily participated in the death of a cat which he then threw to the bottom of a cistern of his house in the countryside. One day the cat disappears and the silence produces both relief and bewilderment. Later, Federico discovers the dead cat, hidden in the cistern of the shared courtyard. Surprised, he throws it wrapped in a bag into a dumpster in the street, making sure no one sees it. Cecilia, like Beba, seems to assume that Federico has been in charge of killing the animal and they celebrate, together, the new tranquility of the nights. From that moment on, they begin a sexual-sentimental relationship that ends with her moving to live as a couple in his apartment, arranging all the furniture in the same way as in her old apartment. As a disturbing element, the journey between home and classroom always forces Federico to cross a park where the professor discovers a group of old women feeding and performing rituals with stray cats. Beba is part of that group. Federico receives the news that he is going to be a father, even though his partner swore to him that he was taking contraceptives. Cecilia and Federico decide to have the child. But the curse of the old neighbor ends up bearing fruit: Cecilia brings to life a weak, deformed and sickly being, in need of an incubator during his first days. However, the worst is yet to come: when it seems that the baby is in good health, when they take him home, his parents discover that he screams with the same unbearable shrillness as the dead cat. One night when they can't stand his "meowing" any longer, Federico takes the baby to the clinic: but on the way, he stops crying. Believing that the car ride has quieted him, the father returns home happy. When he arrives, he discovers that Cecilia has killed Beba: that is why the baby has recovered. However, Ani and the other old ladies have the last word: and with a definitive ritual on Beba's corpse, they unleash on the baby an irreversible and endless catalog of exasperating meows that will make Federico and Cecilia's life a suffering that seems to last forever. Life is long, the old women used to say...
