    • THE BURDEN OF THE PAST is a story that raises a
      fundamental question about the human rights of former
      convicts and depicts society’s relentless discrimination
      they’re facing. Inspired by the true story, the film follows
      the editorial team at Japan’s only magazine that helps
      ex-cons find jobs. They assist Taku, a hit-and-run
      manslaughter who was jailed for 10 years, and 4 other
      ex-cons. The staff is committed to helping them return
      to society by drawing on drama therapy methods from
      America, leading to a theater performance where they
      bear their souls. The ensemble represents a dark
      corner of Japan’s monotonous and intolerant society,
      where the recidivism is as high as 50%.
