    • Synopsis
    • As summer approaches, Xiaohai, a Fifth grader who lives in the ghost town near the desert, decides to begin his journey to the closeby town in the hope of finding his mother and looking for inspiration for his writing.
During his unexpected hitchhike, Xiaohai encounters another boy and gradually unveils his past. His mother's disappearance and other incidents along the way leave Xiaohai with conflicted feelings about his hometown. As the day goes by, Xiaohai condenses these events into his travel journal, Summer Diary. In reality, Xiaohai never steps outside the desert, while in his writing, he feels the waves rushing up his body, and the whole family surfs far beyond the horizon.
In between fiction and reality, Xiaohai conceals all his regrets but only pictures the ideal illusion: the now barren land was once fertile, so his father's diligence may bring life back to this desert.
