In 1987 Karin Eitel is tortured on TV. My mother named me after her. In 1996, Karin's parents took a photo of me. This film is the search for that photograph. On that journey it tries to reveal a common memory, in which the remembered and forgotten are combined, creating our own version of our past.

    • Synopsis
    • At the end of the summer of 2007, a few days before leaving my home and family to go to college, a fire burnt down our house, taking away the few recollections I had left. Since that moment I feel the need to rebuild this lost memory.

In other people’s recollections of the past I find the possibility of rebuilding my own memory through theirs. In this urge to tell my story, I rewind until the starting point: Karin Eitel. A young woman who was detained in 1987, during the dictatorship, who appeared on public television being interrogated and tortured by Pinochet’s secret services. This event inspired my mother to call me like her, « Karin ».

I was born in 1988, the year of the plebiscite that would determine the continuation of the military regime, and a few months after Karin Eitel’s appearance on TV. I grew up in the 90’s, decade of the return to Democracy. I spent my first years in the north of Chile, between the desert, afternoons at the beach, and elections for new presidents. In 1995, we left the arid North and moved to the South, to the Island of Chiloé. A huge earthquake bade us farewell.

My family and I travelled across the country in a Nissan Sentra. One day, in 1996, I can’t remember whether it was summer of winter, chance put us in touch with Karin Eitel’s parents, right there, in the same island we just had moved to. When they heard that I had been named Karin as homage to their daughter, they took a picture of me to show it to her. I never saw them again.

STORY OF MY NAME will search for Karin Eitel. Today, almost twenty years after having met her parents, I’m starting a journey to the places I used to live in, searching for my lost memories. In a trip across the country, the same that I did in the Nissan Sentra, I will reminisce and reconstruct my memories with those of others, through found home videos of the time. Hopefully, the search for my own memory will reveal the untold story of my generation, the first to grow up in democracy after the dictatorship. On the same route, I’ll search for Karin and this old photography that could be the only record of my childhood.
