    • Synopsis
    • This documentary presents the life and work of versatile artist Néstor Basterretxea. At the age of 89, Néstor faces his last and most extensive retrospective at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao. This arouses contradictions and makes him think and analyze his own life, his works and his relationship to art.

      Throughout this trip, which begins with the preparation of this exhibition, we will discover Néstor´s unique spirit and way of working, and his influence on the culture and contemporary art of the twentieth century.


      Néstor Basterretxea was born in Bermeo (Basque Country) in1924. He was exiled to France with his family during the Spanish Civil War and, due to the outbreak of the II. World War they moved to Buenos Aires, where Nestor worked in the field of commercial art and made some exhibitions. In 1952 he returned to Spain and was chosen to carry out the controversies paintings in the crypt of the Basilica of Aranzazu.

      He was involved in two major art movements: The Spanish group "Equipo 57" with Jorge Oteiza, Ángel Duarte, José Duarte, Juan Serrano and Agustín Ibarrola, and in 1966 the Basque group "Gaur" with Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida, Jose Antonio Sistiaga, Remigio Mendiburu, Jose Luís Zumeta, etc.

      Since 1958 his main activity has been the sculpture, but has also been dedicated to painting, architecture, industrial design, experimental photography and film. In fact, his film Ama Lur (1968) is considered a fundamental piece of the Basque cinema.

      “Señales de Vida” has the collaboration of the Basque Televisión, Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation, Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Basque Film Archive, Sabino Arana Foundation-Goaz Museum and Basterretxea family.
