    • Synopsis
    • SAM is a 34-year-old paramedic. Quiet and withdrawn, his calm demeanor masks a tortured soul with a troubled past. Sam’s affair with MIA is the only comfort and stability in his life. But Mia is married, and her husband TYLER is coming home from an Army deployment. Mia insists on ending their affair, and Sam is frantic at the thought of losing her: he suffers blackouts and finds himself in different places, with no recollection of how he got there.

Sam met Mia through his EMT partner JAY (40) who is married to Mia’s twin sister POPPY. Jay knows nothing of the affair, and he invites Sam to join them all—both sisters and both husbands—for a vacation at a rented lake house. Sam knows he should not go, but he cannot stay away.

The tension and anxiety are too much and Sam blacks out, but none of the others know that his consciousness has shut down. Jay takes a home video of a party that includes Sam during his memory lapse, and Sam behaves strangely: a different manner and a new stutter, and he confesses to killing his little sister SARA when they were small children, by pushing her into a lake.

When he views the video, Sam is distraught: he cannot in fact remember how his beloved sister drowned, and how could he say such a thing? Is he indeed to blame? Sam is terrified, and he leaves for home first thing in the morning. But he does not get far—Tyler’s pickup runs him off the road. Tyler has discovered the affair, and he attacks Sam. Sam is no match for Tyler, and Tyler drowns him in the lake.

We experience the death from Sam’s point of view, his spirit hovering over the lake as his body drowns. A light orb appears, warm and bright, like a portal to another realm. Bathed in the orb, Sam has a clear memory of young Sam and little Sara playing near a lake. Sam pushes his sister by mistake; she falls into the water and Sam dives after her, but he cannot reach her, and Sara drowns. He opens his eyes and he is back at the lake house. At first he thinks his death was just a dream, but soon he realizes that his consciousness now inhabits Jay’s body! Just then he hears Tyler’s truck returning to the house. Since Tyler just killed him, he fears for Mia, so he runs to her room (in Jay’s body) to convince her that he is really Sam and that they must flee.

Naturally no one believes him. Confused and beleaguered, Sam has to deal with the threat from Tyler before he can figure out what’s going on. At the same time, memories from his troubled childhood are surfacing, destabilizing him even further. Tyler realizes that Jay somehow knows about the murder; he shoots Jay with a pistol and stages it as a suicide.

Sam’s host body dies and his spirit leaves and hovers over Jay’s body. The light orb appears again. It brings a memory of a hospital with his parents crying over Sara’s body; he senses that somehow his sister’s death holds the key to his spirit’s ability to travel. Now he finds himself in Poppy’s body. He has learned, and he keeps his identity to himself.
