    • Europe is a world in transition, made and designed by men, marked by the questioning of papal authority in politics, and the weakness of the Holy Roman German Empire.

      With Europe gripped by the Protestant Reformation and the Political Counter-Reformation, the Papacy is weakened and suspicious, keenly observing the development of the three richest, most powerful kingdoms, all capable of raising powerful armies: France, England and Spain. Inevitably the monarchs are fierce rivals, vying for supremacy, security and their lives!

      In this determined power struggle, the queen of Scotland, Mary Stuart, is just a pawn in the conspiracies being hatched between the Papacy, a declared enemy of Elizabeth as the head of the Anglican Church; Philip II of Spain, determined on his crusade against Protestantism and on maintaining his vast domains; his former mother-in-law Catherine de Medici, the intelligent, astute regent of France, and the person who would be heir to the Scottish Crown and a traitor to his own mother, Prince James.
