    • Synopsis
    • Inspired by our current reality of Big Business, Traditions and Forces of Nature, Queen of the Rain tells the story of the courage of the youth facing the consequences of the past and challenging systems to reinvent the present and save the future.

The series starts as a tumultuous coming-of-age story of a single mother and her daughter on the verge of turning 18. Makobo fled South Africa 17 years ago to get her infant daughter to safety. Now living in Toronto, Canada, this African single mother and her headstrong daughter navigate the immigrant experience in Canada at a time when Khetoane, the rebellious 17-year-old embraces the courage of youth to challenge the status quo as the only Black ballerina in the snow-white Toronto Ballet Company. The rebellion of the youth and refusal to accept this ‘normality’ propels Khetoane to break the rules and go against the stream to grab a hold of her dream. This leads her to meet the revolutionary choreographer Ryad Hunter. The attraction is immediate and undeniable. An Epic Love Story is born...

Makobo is in the grip of terrifying news from home, South Africa, where a devastating drought has the country and its people on their knees. Her upset at this information is somehow linked to Khetoane turning 18, but she divulges nothing to her daughter, organising instead a protection ritual to safeguard her Khetoane.

Khetoane’s breakout performance as lead dancer in the Ryad’s visionary ballet is about to launch her to the brink of international stardom when her mother is murdered.

This is where the story takes us into the realms of Thriller, Epic Drama and Sweeping Love told in African Magic Realism.
