- Synopsis
- Montreal, 2005. Paula Sterling, a well-known television journalist, stumbles upon the manuscript bequeathed her by her beloved grandfather, Paddon, who died in 1989. A very rough draft of his treatise on Time, the manuscript reawakens childhood memories that plunge Paula into a state of crisis, and suddenly her television work becomes unbearable to her. She decides to embark on an initiatory voyage – a trip that will take her all the way to Calgary, Paddon’s home town.
  As she drives across the country from Quebec to Alberta, she reinvents the story of her grandfather’s life, enriching her narrative with her own memories and fragments of his unfinished book. Paula resuscitates Paddon’s childhood on a ranch in the southeastern part of the province, his university years in Edmonton, the shelving of his philosophical dreams because of family and teaching obligations – but also, most importantly, his love for Miranda, an Indian painter born on the Siksika Reserve east of Calgary.
  Plainsong is a hymn to the beauty of the Albertan landscape, with its infinite skies and endless horizons. It is also a hymn to the imagination, where past and present, love and pain, desire and reality commingle. Its chronology is not that of the calendar, but that of the heart.
