    • Niall conquered all the provinces of Ireland, Britain, and Scotland. Rather than rule over these lands, he took a hostage from each province, nine in total, to ensure that they would not cause any trouble. He made alliances with his hostages and let them bear his children.
Niall becomes King of Ireland in a famous legend when his evil stepmother Mongfind tries to prevent his birth by enslaving his mother and forcing her into labor. Niall survives and returns to court as a young man to claim his throne from his four brothers. His father Eochaid arranges for the brothers to compete with each other for the throne by setting them in a burning forge where they must discover the most valuable item. Niall chooses an anvil and thus secures the crown. He then fights his four other brothers in the other regions of Ireland while Mongfind continues to undermine his path. In time he gains Ireland by taking each of his brothers, hostage. Not content with Ireland he extends his interest to Wales where he takes St Patrick hostage and unwittingly brings Christianity to Ireland. Despite some difficulties Patrick becomes his friend. In time he builds schools and churches in Ireland but Patrick fails to change Niall's warrior ways. Niall works to build his Kingdom, but he turns his attention to England where a piece of land brings about war when he takes his sixth hostage. He does not stop there when he chooses war with Brittany in France to take another hostage. Before long he has nine hostages who he keeps in Ireland at the court of Tara, to help him reign the regions he has taken.
Despite this Niall was in love with the Celtic Princess known as the 'Lightening' Maiden, who had the status of a Goddess of fertility at her royal court in Rheged. She was called Rhiannon Rigantona meaning the Great Queen. As the wife of the Welsh King Oswiu, Niall was playing with fire in associating with her. They embark on a secret affair which was to be his undoing because it brought about a war in Scotland. She casts a spell on Niall and through her erotic powers, he sets up a hareem of women at the court of Tara. Before long the Druids intervene telling him this debauchery must stop or they will end his reign. He does as he is bidden and makes a pact to make all of Ireland a haven for Saint Patrick and the Celtic Christian Druids. Tragically all the deceit that surrounded him, caused his death in battle with one single arrow by his old enemy Eochaid Mac Ennai, who Niall had tied to a stone in the battle for Leinster in Ireland.
During his reign, while he had only two wives and nine children but Niall's romancing with his female hostages meant he had many children from his warring days so much so that one in 10 men in Ireland carry his DNA.
