- Synopsis
- Pierre, upon the death of his father, retires to the countryside to be with his mother.
  Intelligent, erudite, both a scientist and a poet, he has failed in his career
  due to a lack of self-confidence and a lack of self-esteem. His neighbor, who is also his goddaughter, Marianne Chevreuse, endowed with a comfortable fortune that makes her independent, has lived alone since her parents' death.
