- Synopsis
- Emily Jackson (Brittany Murphy) - "Jacks" to her many friends - is a sprightly, fashion-savvy American transplant living in London and working amid the diva-sphere that is "Vogue" magazine. She's irrepressible and talks a blue streak day and night, but her heart's in the right place: in love with love, Jacks is always looking to find perfect matches - like in the movies - for her closest friends and for herself. Her lovable wannabe-screenwriter roommate, Peter (Matthew Rhys), is a constant source of companionship whose slightly nervous disposition is a nice complement to Jacks's hyperactivity: it doesn't phase him, for instance, to return home to find Jacks perched on a kitchen stool, reading "The Naked Chef" in the buff. Just one of several gay men friends in Jacks's life, Peter is often the subject of her pairings. She prides herself on having the best gaydar in London, so when a scrumptious new photographer's assistant, Paolo (drop-dead gorgeous Santiago Cabrera), starts working at the magazine, Jacks sets her sights on matching the two up. Love and Other Disasters bubbles with effervescent nods to Breakfast at Tiffany's, and Murphy shines as a modern-day Holly Golightly, sporting delicious retro dresses and hairdos while chirping away in a string of whimsical banter and gushy pop-psych idioms. Sexy and funny, she lives a charmed existence - zipping between work, galleries and restaurants in her Mini Cooper - but she is totally blind to matters of the heart and when her true love tries to profess his feelings, he can't get a word in edgewise.
