    • Synopsis
    • The film is based on The Cleaner, Marina Abramovic’s big traveling retrospective exhibition with its final destination in Belgrade, Marina’s hometown. The place she left to embark on her artistic and life adventure, some 40 years ago. The return is exciting, painful and joyous at the same time. Memories, contemplation, love and bitterness
are what makes her return extraordinary.
However, numerous young people follow in her footsteps, living their unique version of Marina’s experience. They undergo special preparations, both physical and psychological, in order to act out, live through – re-perform some of Marina’s great performances all around the world. This process is sometimes difficult, full of sacrifices, stoic decisions and unusual exercises, but it is also, evidently, something this group of devotees is very familiar with. Throughout the process, they closely interact with Marina, forming an intimate, caring and warm relationship. Nonetheless, these are not just imitations, mere replicas of past experience, but individual personal experiences of these young people, creating authentic stories full of new visions and scenes, as well as fresh interpretations of re-performance as a whole.
As these two stories intertwine, one about Marina’s family, professional and intimate life, secretive, sometimes dark, often passionate and upsetting, and the other about a young re-performer and her friends, the structure of the film is formed – two authentic testimonies resulting in one theme: performance and re-performance.
The story unfolds as a documentary, on various locations, including city streets, galleries, museums, apartments, of New York, The Hudson, Zurich, Torun and Belgrade, with sights, actions and works yet to be seen, an abundance of emotion and life circumstances a great artist faces, raising the question of whether these young re-performers are indeed Marina’s children, those she never had in real life?
Marina herself will say that no one has spoken about the question before, not this way. For this reason, the film is important and different from any other film about, or with Marina Abramovic.
