    • Synopsis
    • One of the most unusual films at this year's Cannes Film Festival with Miguel Gomes returning to the style known from his most famous film Taboo. Grand Tour is a peculiar story about fiancés separated on the Asian outskirts, captivating with a brilliant combination of poetic travelogue and road cinema. Gomes merges modernity with history, humor with melancholy, and reflections on the colonial past with a fascination for Asian cultures. The film takes us on a wild odyssey from Singapore, through Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, to Japan and China. It incorporates elements of silent cinema, shadow theatre, street art, opera, and meditation—a fascinating mix. Gomes juggles conventions, changes languages, and often leaves lost heroes—"strangers"—out of the frame. Perhaps they are just ghosts of forgotten lovers? Grand Tour makes for cinema with soul, full of admiration for the world, and a mesmerizing blend of genres and emotions.
