An unknown indigenous great grandmother’s picture is the starting point of the documentary “Genoveva”. No one in the family knows, and if they knew they wouldn’t care. Just one photograph of her remains, and is the excuse to talk about mixed breeds.

    • Synopsis
    • The photograph of a great grandmother of whom no one knows anything about is the starting point for the film “Genoveva". It seems to be she was Mapuche, an original people inhabiting the south of Chile, never conquered by the Spaniards. No one in the family knows anything about this and, should it be true, it seems to be that nobody cares. All that remains is her photograph and the few clues we receive from this image become the pretext to talk about the remembrances and the cross-breeding.
Starting from the revision of this image, followed by visits to civil registrar offices, going through old affidavits, interviews with historians and relatives, to the photography staging and visits to villages in the south of Chile and old archives in Spain, we reconstruct the few fragile traces still existing of that forgotten great grandmother.
Thus, the film builds up with the slight traces left by the images and bends in the memory, allowing for the creation of a character: great grandmother Genoveva, which thinks solely about a future without memory and who, by means of her representation by an actress, realizes her own remembrance.
"Genoveva" is the amalgamation of brief memories becoming a story, written by a mother that enables her daughter to listen to the echoes of her past.
