- Synopsis
- Dylcia Pagan was born in the Bronx and raised in East Harlem El Barrio. She was a child star, on The Children’s Hour on NBC. She was community activist and organizer. She struggled to create a Puerto Rican studies department in Brooklyn College that still exists today. She worked as a journalist and television producer for ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS. She was a member of the FALN, (Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional) – the Armed Forces of National Liberation, a clandestine group dedicated to fighting for the liberation of Puerto Rico from the US colonial rule. She gave birth to a son and was forced to give him up to strangers to raise when she went underground to continue the fight for her country’s freedom. She was arrested, charged with seditious conspiracy, and refused to participate in her trial by taking a prisoner of war status, in which she did not recognize the US government as having any jurisdiction over her throughout her trial. She was found guilty and sentenced to sixty-three years. Twenty.
  We live in a world that confuses prominence for significance, fame for importance and celebrity for substance. In a different world Dylcia Pagan would be universally hailed as a heroine. She would be recognized for the sacrifices she’s chose to make and would be a living folk hero. But that’s all not the world we live in. Dylcia is significant but not prominent, important but not famous, substantial but not a celebrity.
