    • Synopsis
    • A few years after the First World War claimed his only son and a sudden illness took his wife, Seamus leads a solitary life, tending to a lighthouse on a picturesque island off Ireland's coast. Seamus's only company is Maire, a spinster who quietly longs for him. Though the lighthouse serves as a guide for wayward ships, its keeper is lost, haunting the island's steep, sea-battered cliffs alone with his grief, and rowing out each morning into the dark ocean where his son drowned.

But Seamus is forced out of isolation when he finds himself at war with a local priest, who insists his late wife should be buried in the consecrated ground of the church cemetery, rather than a private plot overlooking the turbulent channel where her son drowned. As Seamus struggles against pressure from the villagers, he finds an unexpected ally in Edith, an American war widow whose husband died in the very wreck Seamus's son was searching for when he drowned.

Edith and Seamus bond over their shared grief, much to Maire's displeasure. As the priest's efforts to reinter his wife push him to a breaking point, Seamus must either bring on the death he's been longing for or risk further pain in the hope that there can be life after loss.
