    • Synopsis
    • At the end of 2018, Sergio (40 years old) isolates himself in a distant abandoned ranch in Patagonia, where he arrives by sailboat, with the idea of repairing a ranch where to spend three months in solitude, in contact with nature.

In this trip he seeks to answer some questions about the human life system in these times. That motivates him to film himself alone and record his experience.

From the long days of summer, we move on to the endless winter nights. And Sergio is still there. The place has him trapped, enchanted. Without direct communication or electricity, he maintains the battery charge of his cameras with solar panels to photograph wild nature. For his maintenance work, he uses hand tools, and does not use fossil fuels. He also does not carry firearms.

In winter, most birds migrate and rivers freeze, making it difficult to get fresh food. That makes him devise a system for trapping wild bulls with rope traps.

Over time, we see the transformation of a seasoned and sensitive person who develops a deep relationship with wild nature in a pristine environment.

After the arrival of a ship, Sergio gets in touch with his friend Manuel, to whom he begins to send the footage and tell his experiences in audio recordings. Thus, Sergio and Manuel maintain an unpredictable communication through shipments of recordings that arrive every time a sailboat or expeditionary passes through the area.

All the footage filmed is made by the protagonist of the film and within the same experience. During the filming process, the narrative line of the documentary develops from Sergio's conversations with Manuel. After completing two years of isolation (at the end of 2020), Sergio finds himself at a crossroads: return to the city amid the Covid-19 pandemic or remain in place at the risk of becoming a hermit. He deeply feels that he has changed and that he is in a process of internal metamorphosis.

The images of BEYOND PATAGONIA are unique, and they show a four-year experience in a place like few others are left in the world. Currently (August 2022), Sergio is spending his fourth and last winter in this place. Although his equipment has deteriorated, he continues to make recordings of his experience. We still don't know what the farewell of his life in Bahía Aguirre will be like, but we do know that before the end of next summer (March 2023) he will be back in the city. He will see a route, a hospital and a baby again. He knows very well how difficult it will be to return to life in society. The last quarter of this movie is his preparation to come back.
