- Synopsis
- ALICE is a scientist by education: she has a sceptical and logical mind, but can appreciate the wonders and mysteries of the universe. She allows herself to flirt with the possibility of an esoteric mysticism behind the unanswered questions... but ultimately she likes fact.
  
  JAY on the other hand is a reluctant spiritualist. He can sense disembodied energies – be they the souls of dead people or other entities – usually in a clairaudient way. He’s always had this gift, but he’s embarrassed about it, and would really rather he didn’t have it.
  
  The two meet in a pub in the ancient city of York (in northern England) a few days before Christmas. They’ve met a couple times before, but it’s this third date where they really click, bonding over a love of David Bowie’s role in the film Labyrinth. Alice is spending that Christmas with friends because her parents are in Australia visiting her brother. Jay was due to spend it back home in the Lake District, but at the last minute before boarding the train – and with some prompting from a seemingly possessed digital display board – Jay decides to scrap his plans and spend Christmas with Alice in her flat (and the benign entity she shares it with). So their relationship begins.
  
  The next Christmas, Alice and Jay visit the Lake District to visit Jay’s parents. It’s during this trip that Jay senses a strange premonition, in which a wraith-like doppelgänger acts as a harbinger of doom. Shaking off any negativity and aware that messages like this can be read in multitudinous ways, Jay proposes to Alice at the ancient Castlerigg stone circle in a beautiful night-time setting.
  
  Jay prefers to block out any communication he receives from spirits or entities, but he cannot deny their presence. And since falling in love with him, Alice slowly begins to question her beliefs. Her rationale demands that she seeks further evidence of what they’re experiencing. This arrives through the character of AARON TOLLEY, a friend and paranormal investigator.
  
  By the third Christmas, Jay has died, and Alice is pregnant with his baby. During this sorrowful yuletide, she faces all her doubts about Jay’s beliefs and opens up to the possibility that he may be communicating with her from the spiritual realm.
  
  A festive Capra-esque triptych love story with a sprinkling of magic realism, BETWEEN THE LIGHTS subtly addresses the mysteries of the cosmos and the question of life after death.
