    • Synopsis
    • “You and I are going to rule this world.”

The two men who vowed to succeed together are Kyoji Murata, a young yakuza leader, and Ippei Otomo, his right-hand man.

With the intellectual Kyoji acting as the head and the tough fighter Ippei as his arm, the two men attempt to rise to the top of the underworld. However, in the midst of a conflict with a brutal yakuza named Tadaomi Daté sent in by a rival gang, Kyoji and the others are transported back in time to the end of the Edo period (late 1860s) by a mysterious child who appears out of nowhere.

There, Kyoji meets a man, who turns out to be the famous historical figure Ryoma Sakamoto. To their surprise, Ryoma and Kyoji look exactly alike. Kyoji had always looked up to Ryoma, a visionary during turbulent times, and is bewildered by their likeness. Then, as if to plunge the already flustered Kyoji into further confusion, a gang of men comes looking for Ryoma, who ends up being slain to protect Kyoji.

Without Ryoma’s intervention,Takamori Saigo and Kogoro Katsura will never join hands. Japan will never evolve into a modern nation. Having witnessed the man he respected die before his eyes, Kyoji decides to take Ryoma's place to bring about the dawn of modern Japan that Ryoma had set out to achieve.

Meanwhile, Ippei and his underling Akira Takanashi are also transported to the end of the Edo period, and they join the Shinsen-gumi — a group of elite swordsmen commissioned by the ruling government —by chance. The two join forces with the demanding Vice-Commander Toshizo Hijikata and other Shinsen-gumi members including Soji Okita and Sanosuke Harada.

Kyoji-as-Ryoma struggles to build a new country with the support of Ryoma’s wife Oryo and former Tosa Domain samurai Shintaro Nakaoka. Ippei longs to return to the modern world, but is dragged into Shinsen-gumi’s bloody conflicts, bound by the uncompromising code of the group. The raging waves of the times are about to swallow up the fates of two men who once promised each other they would rule the modern-day underworld together.

Will Japanese history take its proper course? When the two gangsters face each other again, further incidents break out at the end of the tumultuous Edo period.
