- In a world where guns lurk in places you'd never imagine, the precious balance between tragedy and triumph of everyday life rings true in AMERICAN GUN.
  A Virginia gun store is a haven for owner Carl Wilk (Donald Sutherland). It's a business that has brought him enjoyment and financial security, supporting his family through generations. His newest employee is his college student granddaughter (Linda Cardellini) who, although repulsed and terrified at first by the weapons, falls prey to the lure and seduction of the product she sells.
  In Oregon, Janet (Marcia Gay Harden) is a single mother of a suburban high school killer, struggling with painful questions during a heart-wrenching television interview. It is the shooting's third anniversary and her younger son is the same age as his brother when he carried out the terrible act before turning the gun on himself. Watching the interview intently is the middle-aged cop (Tony Goldwyn), still haunted by accusations that he could have done more to prevent the tragedy.
  Across the country, on Chicago's gritty west side, we bear witness to the school principal's (Forest Whitaker) daily struggle to keep his violent inner-city high school from detonating, while his wife desperately fears for the safety of their young son. and, when his most-prized student is caught hiding a handgun, both principal and student find themselves facing decisions they never wanted to make.
