Documentary - Completed 2016

A cross-section of today's Roman suburb, with all its contradictions, told by someone who has always lived there. An encounter-clash between different cultures and ethnicities that generates contempt but also fascination.

    • Synopsis
    • The story of Mauro Bonanni, known as Barella, cynical Roman junkyard worker, who grew up between the Certosa and Torpignattara neighbourhoods, where for years he has run a car wrecking yard, a crossroads of characters typical of the Roman suburbs.
Barella is a man of the streets, he comes from the poverty of the shacks and, like many, lives with unease the presence of immigrants, who have 'invaded' the neighbourhood where he was born and lived the difficult but carefree years of his youth. His is a contradictory racism, alternating aggressive attitudes with moments of humanity and attraction for those distant lands and cultures, in which he sees the only way out of an increasingly bleak and desolate life. The story, in fact, goes beyond the borders of the Roman suburbs, moving to Africa, where the urban greyness is replaced by colours and new possibilities: the encounter with that place, with that people who are 'different' but so similar to him, helps him rediscover his humanity and love for life.
