    • Synopsis
    • At the crack of dawn, one of the many tragic dawns of Auschwitz, the door of a livestock wagon swings open at the end of the train trip. Before the eyes of the deportees a monstrous sight of a concentration camp lies before them, while the attention of the soldier, who is brutally pushing people down from the wagon, is struck by something amazing, this induces him to go running and knocking on the door of the high field marshals. This is the room of one of the most evil minds that humanity has ever known. Mengele, the torturer, sadistic experimenter. He is still immersed in his sleep. Josef Mengele is not happy that his dreams, perverse as those when vigil, are interrupted, but the soldier assures him that it's worthwhile.
Mengele rushes and his eyes light up before that trembling portion of humanity who just got out onto the field. Seven Dwarfs were among the deported that morning. Seven young men and women suffering from dwarfism, whom all belong to the same family, with three other brothers of normal height: the ten Ovich brothers. Two boys and five girls.
"I have work for the next twenty years," he says filled with wicked joy, thinking about how many experiments he could do on so much human material.
The dwarf children, along with their father tread the boards, calling themselves 'The Lilliput'. They are aware of being artists, they play instruments of sizes to fit their smaller fingers, they dance with harmonious movements, they recite lines that sway the public to belly laughs and applause. They capture the audience with their skills. Then sorrow hits them hard: their father dies still young, at age 55. The mother, a few years later falls ill with tuberculosis, and on her deathbed makes the children promise that they will stay united forever, because that is their real strength.
Nazism rages in Europe, but the ten brothers live the coming and expansion like a distant echo, so immersed in their own world of family affections, stages and success. Jews cannot travel freely because of the racial laws? They all get a fake passport and fearlessly continue to tread the boards.
Only in March 1944, the Ovich family returns home, beginning to fear for their safety. Better to stay in their village, the whole family gathered to be strong and support each other as always: it’s the promise made to their mother, and so be it.
Nazi tyranny, however, also comes too Rosavlia, forcing the Ovich’s, like all Jews, first to wear the yellow star of David on their clothes and then off they are, torn from their homes!
The Nazi roundups arrive one evening, during dinner time and they do not even give them time to wash up the dishes, something that the women asked to do, perhaps to give themselves some hope of return: the answer is mocking and evil: "Who ate from my plate? Who drank from my glass?” Childhood memories of the famous fairy tale and then the harsh truth; those dishes are no longer needed, because the little people will never return home.
